Project Goals

The documentary film “Hruszów. Wspólnota ponad granicą” tells the story of a historic church located in present-day Ukraine and the Polish community connected to this sacred site. From its inception, the building served as a garrison church for cavalry units, first for the Austro-Hungarian forces and later for the Polish army. The film’s narrative is built around the testimonies of its main characters, particularly the witnesses who remember the times before and during World War II. An important aspect of the project was also the digitization and digital reconstruction of the monument, which is currently in poor condition.

Memory

The film was primarily documentary in nature, with its most important element being the stories of those whose youth was connected to Hruszów and its church. The historic monument, built during the time of the partitions, witnessed many tumultuous events, including the splendor of the Second Polish Republic, the presence of numerous Polish cavalry units in Hruszów, and the tragic experiences of World War II, including resettlements and the church’s degradation to a kolkhoz warehouse. In the memories of the film’s protagonists, the church remains a symbol of the community that thrived here before the war.

New Life of the Monument

The digitization and three-dimensional visualization of the church allow for the preservation and remote sharing of the monument. The 3D-printed replicas of the restored monument are displayed at the Museum of the Eastern Lands of the Former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in Lublin and the Lubaczów Municipal Office. Additionally, during the project’s implementation, discussions about the potential revitalization of the church were revived. Although the revitalization efforts had begun, they were interrupted by the pandemic and later by the war initiated by Russia. The plan envisions the restored building serving as an ecumenical church for Ukrainian and Polish military units and a venue for cultural events.

Technology

During the filming in Ukraine, the church in Hruszów was scanned using photogrammetric methods. The 3D scan plays an important role as documentation of the monument’s current state of preservation. Additionally, it served as the basis for creating a 3D reconstruction of the church as it appeared during the interwar period. A wide range of sources was used for this purpose beyond the scan, including notes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, archival photos and postcards, oral testimonies from witnesses, technical documentation prepared by the Lubaczów Municipal Office for conservation work, and discovered elements related to the church (such as original roof tiles and an iron cross).

Animacje wczesnośredniowiecznych grodów w fabularyzowanym filmie dokumentalnym „Od Popiela do Piasta“ z serii Tajemnice początków Polski miały kardynalne znaczenie. Nasza współpraca układała się wzorowo, począwszy od bardzo dobrej komunikacji podczas przekazywania naukowych wytycznych przy rekonstruowaniu zabytków do ustawień pracy kamery i oświetlenia. Dzięki temu obiekty historyczne zostały zrekonstruowane z pietyzmem, a animacje zyskały filmowy charakter.
Dziękuję za znakomity efekt!
