Objective/Narration

History

Creation of a three-dimensional visualization of antique jewelry from Pińsk

Objective
Exploration and preservation of medieval jewelry-making techniques

The project, resulting from cooperation with the National Museum in Lublin, brings to life in 3D one of the most valuable medieval treasures acquired by the Museum of the Eastern Territories of the Old Polish Republic – the treasure of silver jewelry and Arab coins from Pińsk in Polesie. It is a story about our earliest history presented through the prism of material culture, revealing the unique aspect of heritage, which was the production of sophisticated jewelry. The entire narration of the film is based on statements and opinions of researchers involved in the interdisciplinary study of these treasures: archaeologists (Prof. Dr. Marcin Wołoszyn, Marta Cyran), historians (Dr. Tomasz Markiewicz, Dr. Marcin Gapski), and conservators (Dr. Elżbieta Nosek).

Common Heritage

The artistry of early medieval jewelers serves as a backdrop for a narrative about the shared heritage of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, alongside a rich historical context. Despite the modern-day border separating the region, it developed as a cohesive entity in the Middle Ages, influenced by a range of factors. Pinsk, where the treasure was found and now situated in Belarus, was once an important hub of the Second Polish Republic. The circumstances surrounding the creation, concealment, and subsequent discovery of this trove of artifacts in the 20th century provide a window into the history of the region and its diverse community.

Digital Visualisation

The use of 3D scanning and microscopic imaging techniques on jewelry allowed for the observation of intricate chemical processes and elaborate decorative techniques employed by medieval jewelers. The film showcases scans of artifacts obtained during the digitization process, as well as animations illustrating the creation of these goods in the past. The entire process of creating the visualizations was carried out in accordance with strict guidelines provided by specialists.

Scientific Experiment

The production of the film became a kind of archaeological experiment, which allowed for the creation of a 3D visualization of the Pinsk Treasure, presenting both conservation and research challenges. This safe recreation of the authentic appearance of the excavated material provided a tangible connection with the artifact.

Animacje wczesnośredniowiecznych grodów w fabularyzowanym filmie dokumentalnym „Od Popiela do Piasta“ z serii Tajemnice początków Polski miały kardynalne znaczenie. Nasza współpraca układała się wzorowo, począwszy od bardzo dobrej komunikacji podczas przekazywania naukowych wytycznych przy rekonstruowaniu zabytków do ustawień pracy kamery i oświetlenia. Dzięki temu obiekty historyczne zostały zrekonstruowane z pietyzmem, a animacje zyskały filmowy charakter.
Dziękuję za znakomity efekt!
